What Is Mobility?

Drivers for Business Mobility:

Replace paper-based processes
Improve data integrity and reduce administration costs

Automate manual processes
Reduce processing time and resources needed to manage repetitive tasks

Access data on-demand from any location
Enable mobile workers to be more accurate at critical decision points and more responsive to customer enquiries

Increased productivity
Remove the administration burden and empower mobile workers to focus on core business activities

Reduce administration & operational costs
Eliminate double data entry, reduce keying errors and lower operating costs
Increased responsiveness
Respond more efficiently to customer enquiries and competitor activities
Mobile worker management
Communicate more effectively with mobile workers and have greater visibility of their daily activities
Market awareness
Capture data on competitor activities and market conditions

Traditionally, higher levels of processing power, memory and storage capacity have been required for rich business application functionality and applications such as CRM and ERP systems have therefore been confined to desktop computers. In recent years, laptops have become popular as desktop replacements, though whilst they deliver effective levels of application and data portability, laptops do not deliver the on-demand operability needed to be utilised efficiently by mobile workers.

The rise of PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), Tablet PCs and recently Ultra Mobile PCs has largely addressed this operability deficit by providing more portable devices, with integrated communications and instant-on capabilities. These features dramatically improve a mobile worker's ability to rapidly capture or access data at critical decision points. However due to the performance limitations inherent in these devices, application functionality can be severely limited.

To enable mobile workers to perform business tasks effectively from any location, a balance is needed between these two systems. Mobile workers need the portability and instant-on functionality offered by devices such as PDAs and Tablet PCs, the rich application functionality available in their desktop systems and the ability to connect to core business data sources on-demand, to submit captured data or to obtain up-to-date and accurate information.

This balance is what Bright Software delivers. We empower true business mobility by providing the required mobile application development tools, device engine(s) and server-side components needed to rapidly build and operate rich applications for use on mobile computing devices, such as PDAs, Tablet PCs and Ultra Mobile PCs, connected securely to core business data sources.

Why Do I Need Mobility?

There is no doubt that the application development platforms we see today are getting more powerful everyday, with an ever growing list of funky features, bells and whistles.  But there is a downside to this, in that these development environments are themselves getting more complex and more difficult to master.

Hypothetically speaking, given infinite time and resources, it becomes possible for very powerful enterprise solutions to be developed and deployed.  However that is not the reality and development projects can too often turned to disaster, when a supposedly productive tool assumes a monstrous life of its own, and greedily devours valuable and limited project resources.  And unfortunately, the matter does not stop there.
